#240 - Jeffrey Peel: England Lifts All Restrictions, NI Protocol, and the WEF

In the last week, both England and Northern Ireland have lifted their covid restrictions, including the vaccine passports, allowing us all to get back to a little more of a normal life. Despite that, we've almost got war with Russia, ongoing disputes about the NI Protocol threatening to bubble over in NI (having already brought down the Executive), and we've got more and more information coming to light about the World Economic Forum (who will be getting a special podcast on Thursday) - the shady group that claims to have penetrated (their words not mine) most of the cabinets of the world. 
Jeffrey Peel is a former Conservative politician who worked to try to bring the Tories to Northern Ireland. He has worked for the UK Dept for International Trade, in market research and consulting, and consulted for a number of free market think tanks. #239 - Kojo Koram on How Britain’s Empire Became A Global Corporate/Financial Empire

There has been a lot of discussion over the past few years about the impact of Empire, especially with the toppling of the Colston statue and the BLM protests in 2020. However, what is not as often discussed is the financial and corporate legacy left by the British and other European Empires. Kojo Koram is the author of the brand new book, Uncommon Wealth, on this very topic. In this show he walked me through the key points of his book - namely how much of the empire did not disappear with decolonisation, but instead, it morphed into the global corporate/financial empire that has come to dominate the world today. 
Dr Kojo Koram is a Lecturer in Law at Birkbeck School of Law, University of London. He joined Birkbeck in September 2018, prior to which he was a Lecturer at the School of Law at the University of Essex between 2016-2018.
Before working in academia, Kojo worked in social welfare law, as well as youth work and teaching. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2011 and then received his PhD in 2017. In 2018, the Association for the Study of Law, Culture and the Humanities awarded his PhD the Julien Mezey Dissertation Award for the dissertation that most promises to enrich and advance interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of law, culture and the humanities.

#237 - Greg Foss - Truckers vs Trudeau: The Story Of The Canadian Freedom Convoy [Live]

I always thought the phrase "the revolution will not be televised" was a cliche, until 2022 and the Canadian Truckers. There is something approaching a soft revolution happening in Canada right now, truckers, farmers, and other supporters drove a convoy of 10s of thousands across Canada to the capital and have blockaded the area surrounding the parliament for 3 weeks now. They have stated they will not leave until Trudeau resigns or the covid mandates and restrictions have been liften. The media and the Canadian government have claimed that these truckers are a fringe minority of racists, misogynists, and Nazis. They have asked the army to remove them and they refused, they asked the tow truck companies to tow them out and they refused. They have tried to deny truckers blocking a major border crossing to the US from Alberta access to food or water, they threatened to revoke licenses and arrest truckers at the border and in Ottowa - and still the truckers were unmoved, in fact, some rumours have suggested they are only growing in number. The fundraiser set up on Go Fund Me was halted after raising $10 million, so they turned to Bitcoin. The government has made honking and giving gas to truckers illegal, and so they revved their engines instead and the people brought more fuel than ever. 
This story, regardless of whether you believe in their cause or not, is truly astounding. This is a battle, occurring in a developed country, where borders are being blocked and the capital city is being occupied and blockaded. And the wildest part yet, it's barely been covered in the mainstream press, the legacy media are acting as if this incredible story is not happening - it's unbelievable. So I wanted to get a Canadian who has been following this story to come on the show and go through the story with me. So I am happy to welcome back Greg Foss, who's previously been on the podcast to talk about Bitcoin, debt, bonds and GME.

#236 - Spencer Jakab - GameStop: The Revolution That Wasn’t?

Spencer Jakab, author of The Revolution That Wasn't, all about the GameStop/Memestock saga in January 2021, was my guest on today's show. Don't worry, Spencer hasn't dented my belief in GME. However, this book is well worth a read for anyone interested in the GameStop story! I learnt a lot and felt that, whilst the conclusions were not the ones I was drawing from this story he is clearly knowledgeable about the inner workings of the market and his perspective was really interesting to me - it's clear that as someone deeply involved in finance that Spencer has more belief in the system that most of my guests - but that does not make his opinions irrelevant, if anything it's crucial to help understand the sheer corruption that the GME story is alleging takes place on Wall Street. If you don't speak to people who believe in a system, you'll never be able to critique it properly. 
In this interview we talk through the ideas that drive the YOLO, Keith Gill's investing strategy, why short selling is part of a fair market, whether he covered naked short selling enough in the book, and how Wall Street (including Citadel) made massive profits from the retail investor revolution. 
The Revolution That Wasn't is the riveting story of how the meme stock squeeze unfolded, and the real architects (and winners) of the GameStop rally. #235 - Mark E. Thomas on Corruption, Oligarchy, and the NHS Health And Social Care Bill

I think I mention the work of Mark E. Thomas on this show almost as much as I reference Naomi Klein and The Shock Doctrine, so it was a pleasure to have Mark back on the show. In this episode we talked through the privatisation of the NHS, the implications of the Health and Social Care Bill, the authoritarian drift of the UK, whether we live in a one party state, and how we reconcile emergency powers that could help a pandemic with a government that has done nothing but exploit it. 
Mark E Thomas is the author of 99%. He has spent most of his career in business; for many years he ran the Strategy practice at PA Consulting Group. During this time, he began to explore whether the tools and techniques of business strategy could be applied to understanding the health and stability of countries. This research led him to the uncomfortable conclusion that many developed countries – including the US and the UK – are unwittingly pursuing economic policies which will result in the unwinding of 20th century civilisation before we reach the year 2050. Hearteningly, he also concluded that this fate is entirely avoidable. Mark is also the author of The Complete CEO, and The Zombie Economy, is a Visiting Professor at IE Business School and has a degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University.

#233 - Mark Solms - The Hidden Spring: A Journey To The Source Of Consciousness

Consciousness is one of the strangest parts of our universe. It's a mind-bogglingly complicated and difficult topic to discuss seriously and almost impossible to measure, let alone define. Where on earth does consciousness come from? However, luckily for us Mark Solms amazing new book, The Hidden Spring: A Journey To The Source Of Consciousness, addresses many of these questions. In this fascinating chat, I asked Mark about how old consciousness is, what part of the brain is creating consciousness, how we are different from animals if at all, and whether we can create consciousness in machines. 
Dr Mark Solms is a South African psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist, who is known for his discovery of the brain mechanisms of dreaming and his use of psychoanalytic methods in contemporary neuroscience. He holds the Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital (Departments of Psychology and Neurology) and is the President of the South African Psychoanalytical Association. He is also the Research Chair of the International Psychoanalytical Association (since 2013).
