#212 - Woke: The Move - Aliens, Antarctica, and Ancient Civilizations [Live]

This is going to be a fun one, I can tell! I've been doing a lot of serious podcasts so I wanted to do some fun ones as well. I watched Woke: The Movie a few weeks back and had my mind blown a little. It's VERY off the wall, talks about Aliens, secret fleets of spaceships, bases in Antarctica, and human colonies on Mars - but there is a lot of fun in entertaining some of these ideas and some truth to be learnt from all of them as well. DMT discussion guaranteed!

#211 - Dr Lee Jones On The Full Brexit, China, and Vaccine Passports [Live]

Dr Lee Jones is a Professor of Political Economy & International Relations at the Queen Mary University of London. Dr Jones and I had a great conversation about China, covid policy, and making the best of Brexit. I've become increasingly concerned that a lot of people in society are unable to move on from the loss of Brexit to find ways to make the best of it - it is not the situation I wanted to be in, I wrote an entire book about it, but I believe there are opportunities to make this work for the British people (though we probably need to ditch the Tories to have any chance of that). It turns out that Dr Jones has similar views to me on the vaccine passports and he believes that the seemingly strange response to covid has been building in our society for a long long time.

#210 - Prof John Turner and Dr William Quinn - Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles

Professor John Turner and Dr William Quinn of Queen's University Belfast were my guests on today's show. They are the authors of the recent book, Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles, which has been critically acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal, The Times Literary Supplement, and the Irish Times, and was named an Economics Book of the Year for 2020 by the Financial Times. With so much talk about inflation, bubbles, cryptocurrency, and an impending financial crash, this felt like the perfect opportunity to get them on the show. We even covered some Evergrande and China details that many people are missing.
 
William Quinn has been a Lecturer in Finance at Queen's Management School since 2018. His research focuses on historical stock markets, stock market bubbles, and market corners. John Turner has been a Professor of Finance and Financial History at Queen’s University Belfast since 2005.  His research is focussed on the long-run evolution and development of banking, banking crises, bubbles, and financial markets. He is the author of Banking in Crisis, published by Cambridge University Press. Banking in Crisis won the 2015 Wadsworth Prize. He is currently an editor of the Economic History Review.

#208 - Julian Winkler: How Ideas Spread On Wall Street Bets

Julian Winkler is the co-author of the paper "Reddit’s self-organised bull runs: Social contagion and asset prices". The paper makes a "theoretical case for how ‘hype’ among retail investors can drive large asset fluctuations". The paper was written before the GameStop Saga kicked off, but the interesting part about this for me was to get an understanding of how he believes idea spread online. I've been thinking about this a lot in the process of writing my book on GameStop and it was fascinating me to talk to someone who was approaching this from an academic approach, not a meme-driven one. This interview was also filmed as part of the documentary I took part in last month, so that's why there are some cuts and guys filming in the background!
Julian is a DPhil student in Economics at the University of Oxford, supervised by Doyne Farmer, Rick Van der Ploeg and Steve Bond, and is part of the Complexity Economics group at the Institute for New Economic Thinking.
Julian was previously a Research Assistant for the Programme on Technological and Economic Change at the Oxford Martin School. His research focused on heavy-tailed phenomena in economic data, investigating their origins, and their implications for policy. He received his MSc in Economics at the University of Warwick in January 2017 and joined Oxford Martin School in September 2017.

I had Kirby Sommers back on my show to talk all about the Prince Andrew lawsuit vs Virginia Giuffre. She has sued him for sexual allegations dating back to the early 2000s when she was being held as a prisoner/slave for Jeffrey Epstein. 
Kirby Sommers is the author of over a dozen books. She is an investigative journalist and an advocate for human rights. Steve Topple is a journalist at the Canary who specialises in issues surrounding disability, health, housing, class, economics and government. ‘Mr Topple’ is also now making waves as an innovative music journalist, breaking the mould in terms of his approach to the industry. He regularly writes for one of the world’s leading music sites, Reggaeville, and is also in partnership with the blossoming Pauzeradio in the UK – offering competitive and professional publicist services. His music reviews have a reputation for being technically in-depth and unique in music journalism.

#205 - Joël Valenzuela on Dash, Dogecoin, and Living Unbanked For 5 Years

Joël Valenzuela has been living without a banked account (or "unbanked") since 2016. He's began with Bitcoin, but when that became too expensive he began transacting with Dash instead and now he actually works for the firm! Dash is part of the digital cash race, alongside Dogecoin, Bitcoin Lightning Network, BCH, BSV, and more. Dash is an interesting option with it's decentralised community making the decisions by vote and incredibly low gas fees, it might almost be better than Dogecoin :D.

#204 - Professor Daron Acemoglu - Why Nations Fail Part 2: Building A Better System [Live]

Why Nations Fail is one of the best books I have read all year. Authors Acemoglu and Robinson insist that "development differences across countries are exclusively due to differences in political and economic institutions, and reject other theories that attribute some of the differences to culture, weather, geography or lack of knowledge about the best policies and practices. For example, "Soviet Russia generated rapid growth as it caught up rapidly with some of the advanced technologies in the world [but] was running out of steam by the 1970s" because of a lack of creative destruction.
Daron Acemoglu is the Institute Professor in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has received a BA in economics at the University of York, 1989, M.Sc. in mathematical economics and econometrics at the London School of Economics, 1990, and Ph.D. in economics at the London School of Economics in 1992.
He was the recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal in 2005, awarded every two years to the best economist in the United States under the age of 40 by the American Economic Association, and the Erwin Plein Nemmers prize awarded every two years for work of lasting significance in economics. Professor Acemoglu’s areas of research include political economy, economic development and growth, human capital theory, growth theory, innovation, search theory, network economics and learning. His recent research focuses on the political, economic and social causes of differences in economic development across societies; the factors affecting the institutional and political evolution of nations; and how technology impacts growth and distribution of resources and is itself determined by economic and social incentives. In addition to scholarly articles, Daron Acemoglu has published four books: Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy (joint with James A. Robinson), which was awarded the Woodrow Wilson and the William Riker prizes, Introduction to Modern Economic Growth, Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty (joint with James A. Robinson), which was a New York Times bestseller in 2012; and Principles of Economics (joint with David Laibson and John List).

#203 - Professor James Robinson - Why Nations Fail Part 1: Does Freedom Lead To Prosperity?

Why Nations Fail may be the best book I have read this year, so I was absolutely delighted when both of the authors agreed to speak to me on my podcast! This is the first of these interviews, with Professor James A. Robinson. The main idea that I took from the book was that across history we can see that freedom - both political and economic - and inclusive institutions are precursors for growth, peace, and prosperity!
An economist and political scientist, James Robinson has conducted influential research in the field of political and economic development and the relationships between political power and institutions and prosperity. His work explores the underlying causes of economic and political divergence both historically and today and uses both the mathematical and quantitative methods of economics along with the case study, qualitative and fieldwork methodologies used in other social sciences.
