#202 - Kurt Wuckert Jr. on the Bitcoin Civil War, Satoshi Nakamoto, and El Salvador [Live]

The civil war raging within the bitcoin community is one that I first came across in my interview with Brad Mills. Kurt Wuckert Jr is a strong advocate for Bitcoin cash and has written extensively in support of BSV, in opposition to many Bitcoin Maximalists like Anthony Pompliano. So I wanted to get Kurt on the show to talk me through the difference between BTC and BSV and to explain the civil war raging within this community!
Kurt is an entrepreneur from Chicago with experience in bitcoin mining, business management, and cybersecurity. As CoinGeek’s Chief Bitcoin Historian, Kurt is a wealth of knowledge on all things blockchain, and he has the unique ability to make complex ideas easy to understand. Kurt is never afraid to engage in a fiery debate, and his editorials are unapologetic while also being fair and fun to read. He is also the host of the CoinGeek Weekly Livestream!

#201 - Ethan Lou On North Korea, Virgil Griffith, and The Ethereum Foundation

It's no secret that I have been exploring some of the ideas of crypto currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum on this show. North Korea is also a fascinating story to me, I've been thinking about it a lot since the string of interviews conducted by North Korean defector Yeon-mi Park. So when this book about Virgil Griffith, Ethereum, North Korea, and blockchain came across my radar I had to get the author Ethan Lou on the show!
In the book Once A Bitcoin Miner, Ethan goes on an epic quest through the proverbial cryptocurrency Wild West, through riches, absurdity, wonder, and woe. From investing in Bitcoin in university to his time writing for Reuters, and then mining the digital asset ― Lou meets a co-founder of Ethereum and Gerald Cotten of QuadrigaCX (before he was reported dead), and hangs out in North Korea with Virgil Griffith, the man later arrested for allegedly teaching blockchain to the totalitarian state.

#200 [Live] - Dr Randy Thornhill: Parasite Stress And How Disease Shapes Our Politics

Covid has caused massive upheaval and disruption around the world, but something I had not given a lot of thought to was the idea that disease shapes our political leanings. The concept of parasite stress is one that has been studied by my guest Dr Randy Thornhill for decades - it's the idea that the more infectious disease that is prevalent in a country, the more right wing and collectivist a population is. With a very strong correlation. With that in mind I was curious as to what sort of effect covid may have on our politics and having watched Dr Thornhill's interview with Jordan Peterson I wanted to get him on the show to talk through these ideas with me.
Randy Thornhill is an American entomologist and evolutionary biologist. He is a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico, and was president of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society from 2011 to 2013. He is known for his evolutionary explanation of rape as well as his work on insect mating systems and the parasite-stress theory.

#199 - Paul Fritjers: Lockdowns, Science, And The Great Covid Panic

A lot of the discussion about an inquiry into the covid response has been, in my view, poorly framed. There are massive lessons to be learned from this pandemic, but I believe that a huge segment of this is being ignored - what the cost of lockdowns will be and has already been. For this reason I spoke to wellbeing economist Paul Fritjers, co-author of the book The Great Covid Panic, who believes that the cost of lockdowns outweighs the benefits 50:1 on a broad societal scale. This can be a difficult topic to explore without sounding callous, that is never my intention, but if the costs are really this great, I believe we have to understand them before we apply the same policy again.
Paul Frijters is a Professor of Wellbeing Economics at the London School of Economics: from 2016-nov 2019 at the Center for Economic Performance, thereafter at the Department of Social Policy. He completed his Masters in Econometrics at the University of Groningen, including a seven-month stay in Durban, South Africa before completing a PhD through the University of Amsterdam. He has also engaged in teaching and research at the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, QUT, UQ, and now the LSE.
Professor Fritjers specializes in applied micro-econometrics, including labor, happiness, and health economics, though he has also worked on pure theoretical topics in macro and micro fields. His main area of interest is in analyzing how socio-economic variables affect the human life experience and the "unanswerable" economic mysteries in life.

Chatter #198 - Tim Weninger On Reddit, GameStop, And The Hive Mind Of The Internet

Throughout the entire GameStop saga, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the idea of a hive mind. I’ve dedicated an entire chapter in my forthcoming book to this idea and I wanted to get Tim’s perspective. I first came across his work on hive minds when I saw his Ted Talk, “Changing the hive mind -- How social media manipulation affects everything”. In it he explores how even a single like can influence huge amounts of people if done at the right time! We talked through social media manipulation, the idea of hive minds on the internet - especially in relation to the Superstonk apes and the GameStop saga, the separation between the online and offline world, and much more.
Tim Weninger is the Frank M. Freimann Collegiate Associate Professor of Engineering in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. His research is in machine learning, network science and social media. He’s interested in uncovering how humans consume and curate information. Tim has done work on the Center for Network and Data Science, the Pulte Institute for Global Development, and the Technology Ethics Center.

One of the biggest stories of the year is the release of the Pandora Papers, whilst we may still be at the beginning of the releases, there is already a lot of stories catching the headlines so I thought it was a great chance to talk about the offshore world and tax evasion more broadly. Joining me today to talk about the Pandora Papers and more is Robert Palmer from Tax Justice UK.
The Pandora Papers is a leak of almost 12 million documents and files exposing the secret wealth and dealings of world leaders, politicians and billionaires. The data was obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in Washington DC and has led to one of the biggest ever global investigations. More than 600 journalists from 117 countries have looked at the hidden fortunes of some of the most powerful people on the planet. BBC Panorama and the Guardian have led the investigation in the UK.

Chatter #194 [Live] - Chris Martenson On Institutional Collapse and Disaster Capitalism

On this episode of Chatter I am speaking to Chris Martenson. I have been paying more and more attention to Chris's channel Peak Prosperity as one of the best places to find calm analysis of the current state of the world. In this episode I wanted to speak to Chris about whether our institutions are failing, how we can reimagine our current system, whether capitalism is doomed, and why our response to covid was so bad.
Chris (PhD) is an economic researcher and futurist specializing in energy and resource depletion, and co-founder of PeakProsperity.com (along with Adam Taggart). #193 - Timothy E. Lee On AI, Self Driving Cars, and The Future Of Transport

Timothy B. Lee is a reporter who has written about technology, economics, and public policy for more than a decade. He joined the Washington Post in 2013 to lead a team covering tech policy. The next year he left the Post along with Ezra Klein and several other Post staffers to launch Vox.com. From 2014 to 2017, he led Vox's coverage of technology and business. He also wrote extensively about economic policy, including monetary policy and housing issues. From 2017 to 2021, he covered tech policy, artificial intelligence, and the future of transportation for Ars Technica.
Earlier in his career, Tim wrote about policy issues for the Cato Institute and freelanced for a variety of publications, including Reason, Ars Technica, Slate, and the New York Times. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree in computer science from Princeton. While at Princeton, he was the co-creator of RECAP, a browser extension that helps people share paywalled public documents from the federal judiciary. The software is still widely used by lawyers, journalists, and non-profit organizations.
