#192 - Sanjeev Sabhlok: What The F*ck Is Going On Down Under?

Sanjeev Sabhlok is back for round 2 on Chatter! Sanjeev is the author of "The Great Hysteria and the Broken State" and a complaint to the International Criminal Court" - the latter is free so people can get an idea of the criminality of the current policies by reading it free of cost. I asked Sanjeev back on the show to talk about what is happening in Australia. The government has taken the enforcement of covid laws to some scary places and there has been a lot of accusations of tyranny and police brutality. I wanted to walk through what is happening on the ground and find out just how draconian the laws have become.

Josh Kosman has been covering the financial industry for twenty-five years. He is a reporter for the New York Post, a former editor at Mergermarket.com and a former senior writer for The Deal and Buyouts Newsletter. He appears frequently in the media as a private equity and mergers expert.
Few people realise that the top private equity firms such as Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts have become America's largest employers through the businesses they own. Journalist Josh Kisman explores private equity's explosive growth and shows how its barons wring profits at the expense of the long-term health of their companies. He argues that excessive debt and mismanagement will likely trigger another economic meltdown within the next five years, wiping out up to two million jobs. #188 - Paul Mason On Fascism, Authoritarianism, And The Polarisation Of Politics

Paul Mason is a journalist, writer and film-maker. His latest book How To Stop Fascism: History, Ideology, Resistance describes the rise of the modern far-right, its colonisation of conservatism and right-wing populism, and the danger it poses amid the wider process of democratic decay. It argues that, faced with the danger of a second fascist era, the centre and left should unite around the defence of democracy and the rule of law, and for tough legislation to limit the activities and funding of fascist groups, and for the creation of a grass-roots anti-fascist ethos in society.
Paul is the author of seven books, including Postcapitalism (2015), Why It’s Kicking Off Everywhere (2012), Clear Bright Future (2019) and Rare Earth: A Novel (2011). As economics editor at both BBC Newsnight (2001-13) and Channel 4 News (2013-16) he won numerous awards, including RTS Specialist Reporter of the Year and the Wincott Award. He has been on the front line of covering the global financial crisis from 2007 onwards – but his work as a reporter ranged beyond economics: he reported from New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the Taksim Square uprising in Turkey, the Gaza War of 2014 and from the floor of the Congress of the Communist Party of China when Xi Jin Ping was inaugurated.

Ben Mezrich is the author of Bringing Down The House, The Accidental Billionaires, and the brand new book The Antisocial Network. Anyone who follows this podcast will know that I have been writing my own book on the GameStop Saga, so before I spoke to Ben and read his book I was a little nervous that he may have beaten me to the punch. Thankfully his book is written like a thriller designed for adaptation to a movie, it’s prose is gripping and packed full of interesting tidbits and great information. He has worked across most public policy areas in his career of 25 years in policy research and evaluation, and has been seconded to the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit and the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) at the LSE. In Generations: Does When You're Born Shape Who You Are?, Bobby Duffy argues we need to drop the stereotypes and focus on more rigorous generational analysis – one of our most powerful tools for understanding how individuals and societies change, and something which is even more important in light of the Covid-19 crisis, a truly generation-shaping event.

#185 - Rosie Holt On Comedy, Expectations Of Women, and Cancel Culture

As a comic she was a finalist in the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year, Bath New Act and Amused Moose New Comic stand up competitions. She won the So You Think You Write Funny? competition and has written and performed in her own shows at the Edinburgh Fringe including Fall Girl, and Mansplaining Feminism with the comic Christian Talbot. As an actor she most recently starred in the two-hander The Crown Dual; a parody of Netflix’s The Crown at Wilton’s Music Hall, London & The Gilded Balloon in Edinburgh and before the pandemic hit was about to take it to America. In the past year she has put out several viral videos on Twitter most often as her character; The Woman; a pearl-clutching, right-wing Boris-loving lady with a lot of opinions she can’t wait to share.

#183 - Jeff Hawkins On The Human Mind And The Thousand Brain Theory Of Intelligence #AI

Jeff Hawkins is the founder of Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience in 2002 and Numenta in 2005. In his 2004 book titled On Intelligence, and in his research before and after, he and his team have worked to reverse-engineer the neocortex and propose artificial intelligence architectures, approaches, and ideas that are inspired by the human brain.
His previous book, On Intelligence, was an impressive scientific journey into intelligence as a memory-prediction system for experiences and therefore vastly different than a computer. He compared a human brain’s neuron to two machine neurons: a traditional neural network neuron and his version of a more sophisticated one in the form of hierarchical temporal memory (HTM) cells. Almost 20 years later, he takes this earlier HTM concept to a higher plane and has truly established himself as both a formidable teacher and an ardent student of intelligence.
His latest book, A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence, is framed in the construct of how the neocortex represents object compositionally, object behaviors, and higher level concepts. The main premise is that every part of the neocortex learns complete models of objects and concepts, and that there are many such models of each object distributed throughout the neocortex that have long range connections (hence the title of the book).
