#158 - Dr Susanne Trimbath on GameStop, Failure To Delivers, and Naked Short Selling

Susanne Trimbath, Ph.D. is the CEO of STP Advisory Services. Dr Trimbath holds a Ph.D. in Economics from New York University and received her MBA from Golden Gate University. Prior to forming STP Advisory Services, Dr. Trimbath was Senior Research Economist in Capital Studies at Milken Institute (Santa Monica, CA) and Senior Advisor on the Russian Capital Markets Project (USAID-funded) with KPMG in Moscow and St. Petersburg. She previously served as a manager in operations at Depository Trust Company in New York and the Pacific Clearing Corporation in San Francisco; she started her career in financial services operations at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Since 1989, Dr. Trimbath has taught economics and finance in university graduate and undergraduate programs as adjunct, associate and full-time professor. In 2009, she was certified to teach in the distance-learning environment by both Bellevue University (Nebraska) and University of Liverpool (UK, by Laureate International, Amsterdam). Dr. Trimbath helped create the Transportation Performance Index for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (Washington, D.C.) which she used to demonstrate the real economic payoff of investments in infrastructure.
Dr. Trimbath authored, edited and contributed chapters to five books, including Mergers and Efficiency (2002), Beyond Junk Bonds (2003), and Methodological Issues in Accounting Research (2006). Her media credits include appearances on national television and radio programs (CNBC’s Power Lunch and NPR’s Marketplace) and the Emmy® Award-nominated Bloomberg report Phantom Shares. She appeared in several documentaries on capital market corruption and the financial crisis including Radio Wars: The Secret History of Sirius-XM Satellite Radio (2012), nominated for Best Documentary by the New York City International Film Festival. Dr. Trimbath’s articles appear in the national publications US Banker, The International Economy, and The American Enterprise in addition to academic, peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Trimbath is a contributing editor at NewGeography.com.

#154 - Mulligan Brothers on Superstonk, GameStop, and the Apes Together Strong Documentary

Quinn Mulligan is a singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon. Quinn first saw local acclaim while playing with his band, Fanno Creek and has since recorded extensively as a solo artist, recording 12 albums in 12 months in 2018. Quinn works with his brother Finley Mulligan to create commercial film work as well as short form documentary films for non-profits in the Portland area.
Finley has spent his career making films at LAIKA studios as 1st Assistant Director where he runs the largest stop motion shooting floor in history. Their latest production ‘Missing Link’ won the golden globe for best animated feature. Outside of his day job Finley partners with his brother to make commercial work and short form documentary for non-profits around town. He is an award-winning writer from organizations such as Screencraft, Wescreenplay, top 20% Nichol Fellowship among others.

#153 - Emma Briant on Cambridge Analytica, Social Media, and Election Meddling

Dr Briant is one of the key researchers who uncovered the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, with two books and two major documentary films, she is an internationally recognized expert on information warfare and propaganda. Films her research featured in include Oscar-shortlisted Netflix film The Great Hack and People You May Know
As Associate Researcher at Bard College she has an extensive background as a professor in information operations, propaganda and human rights. Dr Briant analyzed the coordination and increasing impacts of the digitalization of defense propagandaPropaganda and Counter-Terrorism: Strategies for Global Change (Manchester University Press, 2015). She spent 13 years researching SCL Group and Cambridge Analytica, has mapped their worldwide clients and was central in revealing their wrongdoing in 2018 – this research formed the basis for important evidence submitted to the UK Parliament, US Congressional Committees and Testimony for the European Parliament among other public inquiries and for advising policymakers and Big Tech executives. Dr Briant’s first book was Bad News for Refugees, (Pluto Press, 2013, co-authored with Greg Philo and Pauline Donald), which examined UK political and media discourse on migration prior to ‘Brexit’.

#151 - Sophie Zhang - Whistleblowing On Facebook: Fake Engagement and Election Manipulation

Sophie Zhang is a data scientist and whistleblower who formerly worked at Facebook. From 2018 to 2020, while she was investigating "fake engagement" at Facebook, she uncovered abusive political manipulation and opposition harassment networks in 25 countries. Zhang reported that most of these subversive networks use Facebook's organization pages, configured with human names and photos to mimic human accounts in order to successfully escape Facebook's emerging efforts to counter fake users. She personally made decisions affecting countless world leaders and countries with no public oversight. British newspaper The Guardian is dedicating a series, The Facebook Loophole, based on Zhang's resources and accounts, to report on these Facebook-based political manipulations.

Rafael Yuste is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University and directs its Neurotechnology Center. He led a small group of scientists that inspired the US BRAIN Initiative, announced by President Barack Obama in 2013, and helped form the International Brain Initiative (IBI) in 2017. He also co-led the Morningside Group, a global consortium of interdisciplinary experts advocating for the ethical use of neurotechnology and artificial intelligence. Additionally, Rafael Yuste is a Co-Director of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science at Columbia University, and is a visiting researcher at the Donostia International Physics Center in San Sebastian, Spain.
Rafael Yuste was born and educated in Madrid, where he obtained his MD at the Universidad Autónoma in the Fundación Jimenez Diaz Hospital. After a brief research period in Sydney Brenner's group at the LMB in Cambridge, UK, he performed PhD studies with Larry Katz in Torsten Wiesel’s laboratory at Rockefeller University in New York. He then moved to Bell Labs, where he was a postdoctoral student of David Tank and Winfried Denk.
In 2018, he was awarded the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize by the Tällberg Foundation for his seminal work in inspiring the US and International BRAIN initiatives and for his efforts toward building ethical guidelines for neurotechnology and artificial intelligence.
