Sam McBride on Burned and the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) Scandal

Sam McBride, the political editor of the Newsletter and author of the book, Burned, was our guest on today’s show. Burned tells the story of Northern Ireland’s “cash for ash” Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) scandal. It’s a fantastic piece of journalism that helps you to understand some of the major issues within the Northern Irish government and the way in which numerous civil servants and politicians walked almost blindly into a disaster that could cost the tax payers hundreds of millions of pounds.

Peter Reynolds on CLEAR and the Campaign For Cannabis Law Reform

Peter Reynolds, the President of CLEAR Cannabis Law Reform was our guest on today’s show. CLEAR have been campaigning for years to try to get the government to reform the way we treat cannabis. Momentum has been gaining over the past few years in this area. More than half of the states in America have made cannabis either medically or recreationally legal and Canada have since followed suit. Now with Brexit on the near horizon and the mass global destabilisation caused by the corona virus pandemic, there is a real possibility of reform in the near future.
I learned a lot from this conversation and I’m sure you will too. Embarrassingly for me, in a subject area I thought I was well versed in having written a few pieces for blogs in Canada, I was corrected a few times, but that’s definitely one of the joys of getting to do this podcast, it is the chance to be corrected. Every day is a school day.

Adam Ramsay on Neo-liberalism and the Government Response to Corona Virus

My guest on today’s show was Adam Ramsay, he’s the main site editor at openDemocracy and is a member of the Scottish Green Party, sits on the board of Voices for Scotland and advisory committees for the Economic Change Unit and the journal Soundings. I asked him on the show in response to an article he penned for openDemocracy last month entitled “Stop blaming ordinary people for the UK’s pandemic failures”. He accuses the government of blaming the people for the poor and slow government response to the Corona Virus pandemic via our failure to adhere to lockdown rules. We discussed how the government has responded to the corona virus crisis, the state of neoliberalism and how this crisis will affect politics.
