#289 - Stephanie Savell on The Costs Of War: From Afghanistan To Ukraine

Stephanie Savell is a public anthropologist who researches militarism, security, and civic engagement in relation to the United States post-9/11 wars and policing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As Co-Director of Costs of War, she serves as editor of the project's research papers and executive director of operations. Savell's global map of U.S. counterterrorism operations has been featured by USA Today, BBC World News, and Smithsonian magazine, among others. 
In this episode we discussed the Costs of War - their calculations on the cost of the war in Afghanistan, the larger and broader effects of war on veterans, societies, culture, and the wellbeing of communities on a multi generational scale - not to mention the massive exploitation of the military budget to funnel money into the hands of private military contractors.

Stuart Englert is a veteran newspaper reporter, magazine editor, and writer. He graduated from Indiana University’s School of Journalism in 1984 and worked on publications in Indiana, Idaho, and Tennessee before authoring his first book in 2015. Englert has published nine books, including six of his own titles: “Rigged: Exposing the Largest Financial Fraud in History,” the “Paradox” novel trilogy, “Sold Out—How an American Magazine Lost Its Soul,” and “Sweat & Sawdust: The Life and Legacy of Victor J. Hedinger.
The largest financial fraud in history wasn’t Enron’s colossal accounting crimes, Bernie Madoff’s record-setting Ponzi scheme or the Libor scandal, in which some of the world’s biggest banks conspired to profit by manipulating interest rates. No, the largest financial fraud in history is one most Americans know little to nothing about. It isn’t mentioned by politicians, reported on the nightly news or discussed by coworkers during lunch break. The biggest fraud in history is a financial scheme perpetrated by the U.S. government and its banking accomplices. Over the last century, they’ve used coercion, deception and market manipulation to convince Americans the U.S. dollar is as good as gold and silver.

I first came across Marina seeing her appear on Jeremy Vine and thought she would be a fascinating guest to have on the show. In this discussion, we spent a lot of time discussing whether Labour and the Tories are just two sides of the same coin, whether we need to abandon both parties in order to allow something new to flourish, and if Kier Starmer and the Labour party will actually fix any of the problems we are facing as a country. It was a really interesting debate in which we agree on a lot but draw different conclusions on how we should move forwards and act!
